How To Quickly Clean Make-Up Brushes

Hi everyone, today I am doing another DIY styled post. I am going to be explaining and showing you how I clean my make up brushes, I know that other people may do it differently but I thought that I would show you my way of quickly clean brushes. Although this is a quick way of cleaning your brushes it will still give them a deep clean, which will definitely get rid of all the nasty bacteria!!

Speaking of bacteria, do you know how important it is to keep your brushes clean? A lot of people go weeks without cleaning their brushes which is very bad and unhygienic for your skin!! Let me tell you a good reason why they should be kept clean. For example when you first apply your foundation to your face, your brush picks up bacteria off your skin. This bacteria is then left on the brush to grow and become all dirty. The next time you go to use the brush, the same thing will happen and more bacteria will be added. And again it will be left to grow and get dirtier. This process will just keep repeating it's self and is a consistent loop. That is why keeping your brushes clean is very important. With the growth of bacteria on your brushes they become very unclean. You may wonder where does all of the dirt and bacteria go? Well the answer to that question is your face (it sounds gross I know, but it's the truth). The bacteria will make your skin dirty and can contribute to giving you spots due to all of the dirt and bacteria. I'm pretty sure keeping a few brushes clean isn't a big thing to do to keep spots away because nobody wants them!!

I recommend cleaning your brushes every few weeks, you can do it as often as you think you may need. I sometimes do a quick clean to my brushes but when I have more time I will do a deep clean, however if you suffer from acne or any other skin problems try to clean your brushes more often so that your face stays a little more clean. Hopefully this post is going to help you to keep your brushes bacteria free!! So now that you know a little more about the germs on your brushes and what you can do to keep them clean let's get straight into it...

 1) Firstly take all of your make up brushes to wherever your going to be cleaning them and lay them out on a flannel.

2) Take the first brush you are going to cleaning and slightly dampen it under warm water.

 3) Then on the back of your hand pump a squirt of soap (take as much soap as you need depending on the size of your brush). At the moment I am using a hand soap which has lots of anti bacterial qualities which is good because it will get rid of all the germs!! However you can use shampoo or what ever product suits you.

4) Afterwards start swirling the brush around on your hand, making sure that your hands are clean before you do this step so that no additional dirt will go onto the brush. The make-up will then start to come off.

  5) When most of the soap gone a dirty makeup colour, rinse the brush under warm water, making sure it is facing downwards so that no water is being poured down the brush. If you were to hold the brush upwards then water would go into where the bristles are held together and it would make them looser meaning they could fall out.

6) After that you can squeeze out any left over soap or water. If you still see some soap, it is a good idea to put it under the tap again and try to wash it out. Also if there is still some makeup left on the brush you might need to add a little more soap until it is washed out.

7) You can repeat this process twice if your brushes are quite dirty, personally I like to do it twice so that I know they are properly cleaned.

 8) Once all of your brushes are cleaned lean them against something so that when then dry the bristles are facing downwards this way any water that you may not have squeezed out, will drip down the brush and not into it. Some people prefer to lye their brushes down which you can also do.

 9) I recommend leaving your brushes to dry over night as it will give them enough time to completely dry. Once they have dried they are ready to use again, then you can admire your clean brushes and be happy that the they are all bacteria free (Well for a few weeks anyway!!). Just in case you wondered what soap I used it was just this Palmolive Aquarium soap. It is just a normal basic hand wash, so you can just use anyone that you have at home. If you have sensitive skin I recommend the Dove Soap as it is made to care for sensitive skin.

This is my real techniques foundation brush. I have taken a photograph to show you where the bristles are stuck together and where to avoid letting water get in. If the water got into there then the bristles would become loose and the brush could be ruined, so when cleaning your brushes face them downwards to avoid getting water here!!
That is all for quickly cleaning your make-up brushes, I hope that you enjoyed reading this and that it has made you more aware, of why it is so important to keep your brushes clean!!
